About

What is SYNESIA?

SYNESIA is an educational tool that lets educators and citizens visualize how the same disinformation narratives spread across different European countries and languages.

What the tool IS

  • An accessible educational interface
  • A visualizer of propagation patterns
  • An awareness tool that relies on narratives supplied by its members

What the tool is NOT

  • An automatic fact-checking tool
  • A real-time detection system
  • A tool reserved for professionals

How does it work?

SYNESIA uses semantic clustering techniques: a multilingual model turns each text into a vector, so two narratives that say the same thing in different languages end up close to each other. Narratives added by members are converted this way, which makes it possible to find them by meaning (semantic search) and to group them when they tell the same story, across languages. Without member narratives, grouping runs on a small built-in demo corpus.

Corpus and references

The corpus only holds what members add to it: no external database is imported into it. EUvsDisinfo and the IFCN are public references, to consult when cross-checking.

The corpus

Narratives added by signed-in members: a link, a document (PDF, DOCX, TXT), pasted text or a page sent from the browser extension. Each is flagged "Trusted" when it comes from a project partner or an administrator, "Community" otherwise.

EUvsDisinfoExternal reference

Public database of the European External Action Service: over 17,000 pro-Kremlin disinformation cases, documented and debunked. To cross-check: is this narrative already listed there?

IFCNExternal reference

International Fact-Checking Network (Poynter Institute): it publishes the list of signatories to its Code of Principles, vetted by external assessors. To cross-check: is the fact-checker you are citing on it?

Ethical data collection policy

SYNESIA is committed to using only ethical and privacy-respecting sources.

What we use

Content supplied by members

  • Links to web pages
  • PDF, DOCX, TXT documents
  • Pasted text
  • Images (EXIF metadata)
  • Browser extension (current page)

Public sources, queried on demand

  • Google News RSSon-demand keyword search of the news (News Search)
  • Cert Spottera domain's recent certificates, from Certificate Transparency logs (Source Checker)
Not used
  • X/Twitter API
  • Automated social media collection

No X/Twitter API access: ethical collection policy and terms of service compliance. No Telegram, Bluesky, Reddit or Mastodon connector either: content only enters the corpus when a member adds it.
